Neuschwanstein Castle

History and Fascination

Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most famous landmarks in Bavaria, attracting over a million visitors from around the world each year. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it was designed in the 19th century as a fairytale castle.

The history of the castle began in 1869 when construction started based on designs by Christian Jank and under the supervision of architect Eduard Riedel. Inspired by the romantic vision of a medieval fairytale castle, King Ludwig II wanted a private retreat. At the time of the king’s death in 1886, the castle was not yet fully completed, but it quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Europe.
