The Zugspitze, at 2,962 metres, is the highest mountain in Germany. It belongs to the Wetterstein range in the northern Kalkalpen and is on the border between Germany and Austria. Its name is derived from the numerous avalanches that occur on its northern slopes.

The Zugspitze is the main peak of the Zugspitz massif. Other peaks belonging to this massif are: Schneefernerkopf, Wetterspitzen and Gatterl (2,023 m). The Zugspitz massif is also the meeting point for the Wetterstein main ridge (on the border between Austria and Germany), the Blasse ridge and the Waxenstein ridge. Two German glaciers are located inside this massif: the Schneeferner and the Höllentalferner.
