The Lenbachhaus was built in the 19th century as a Tuscan-style villa for the aristocratic artist Franz von Lenbach. The international reputation of the museum is based on its unique "Blue Rider" collection, featuring works by Paul Klee, Franz Marc, August Macke, Wasiliy Kandinski and Gabriele Muenter. In addition, the art of the Munich School in the 18th and 19th century is represented, as are paintings of the Art Nouveau and Neo-Realistic periods.
