The Alps in close proximity

The Alps are the highest mountain range in Europe. They stretch in a 1 200-kilometre curve with a width of between 150 and 250 kilometres from the Mediterranean to the Pannonian Basin.

There are some highlights in the Zugspitze area, such as the crystal-clear Eibsee, with a depth of almost 1 000 metres, the narrow Partnachklamm (a canyon) or the world-famous capital of German winter sports, Garmisch-Patenkirchen. The adjoining mountain landscapes, the Ammergauer Alpenwelt, Alpenwelt Karwendel and the Blaue Land also have much to recommend them. The strong and clear colours of the lakes and mountains in front of the mighty panorama of the Alps inspired Kandinsky and other painters of the "Blue Rider" group of artists. Even today, they offer an unforgettable experience, whether on bicycle or on walking tours.
